SECTION VI - THE VALLEYS

Insight 450

Allah, the Almighty, said:

{Say: This is my way; I invite to Allah with insight, I and those who follow me…}[Yoosuf 12:108]

Insight is that which rids you of bewilderment. It is of three levels:

The first level is to know that the reported instructions of Shari‘ah come from certain sources and have guaranteed consequences. Thus, you satisfy their rights by finding genuine pleasure in them and being fiercely protective of them.452

The second level is to observe:

  1. the justice in the True One’s guiding and misguiding453

  2. His graciousness in His distribution454

  3. His friendliness in His pulling455

451According to Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah be pleased with him), it is a light that Allah instills in the hearts of His servants, thereby empowering them to behold, with their heart-sight, the truth that was revealed to the messengers.
One may also say it is the in-depth realization of the words of Allah that is not limited to or veiled by the exteriors of the material world around us. Allah said:

{وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ صِدْقًا وَعَدْلًا لَّا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَاتِهِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ}

{And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice. None can alter His words, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing.} (al-An‘âm 6:115)
All His statements are true and His commandments are just, orderly, and purposeful.

  1. His statements include His revelations about Himself and the unseen, humankind, and the universe, as well as His promises and warnings. Complete acceptance of these, while maintaining belief in His transcendence, is the way to baṣeerah in these realms.

  2. His commandments include His creation and ongoing control of the universal order, and His instructions. The way to baṣeerah in these realms is by complete submission to His laws—as explained by the infallible and practiced by the righteous generations—and complete acceptance of His decrees, as well as diligent exploration of His creation (including introspection). Such exploration is not limited to natural sciences, but also includes psychology, anthropology, sociology, politics, and so on—all while observing the certainties of the revealed knowledge.

452 The teachings of Islam come from a certain and infallible source; following them will result in a guaranteed desirable outcome, so those who follow them have nothing to fear or to be anxious about. They must, therefore, rejoice in their obedience and passionately guard the Divine bounds.
453 All He does is the manifestation of His perfection, glory, beauty, justice, and compassion. When He guides someone, it is out of His grace; and when He misguides, it is out of His justice.
454 He gives and withholds, apportions and distributes, for purposes not completely known to us; but He is, in all cases, All-Good and All-Gracious.
455 When He pulls you to His service, it is because He desires your nearness.
456 Ma‘rifah is the inner knowledge that enlivens the heart and causes its trees of virtue to yield their fruit.
457 The gestures are those concepts and thoughts that cannot be expressed verbally. Baṣeerah will groom them and anchor them in the heart, so as to not fade.
