SECTION I - THE BEGINNINGS

Training

Allah, the Almighty, said:

{And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful…}[al-Mu’minoon 23:60]

Training is accustoming oneself to accepting the truth104 . It is of three levels:

The training of the public:

  1. refinement of manners with knowledge

  2. purification of deeds with devotion

  3. fulfilment of all rights in interactions

The training of the select few:

  1. ending dispersion105

  2. refraining from looking back at the station one has transcended106

  3. keeping knowledge flowing in its tracts107

The training of the topmost:

  1. beholding the True One alone108

  2. ascension towards togetherness109

  3. rejection of all objections110 and substitutions111

104 To speak it and accept it from those who speak it.
105 Blocking off all distractions and concentrating on the goal.
106 He must always be seeking to rise and get closer and never accept regression.
The final level of certainty is haqq al-yaqeen (the truth of certainty), which is by feeling. For example, seeing the fire is one thing and feeling its flames is another.
107 Meaning keeping knowledge of the Revelation as a guide and not succumbing to the satanic temptations to give precedence to tastes, feelings, and opinions.
108 This includes refraining from beholding one’s beholding. As we said before, the highest level is full awareness of one’s actions and one’s dependence on Allah in these actions and in every regard. In the last station, Imam Ibn al-Qayyim’s statement was quoted: “fleeing from Allah, to Allah, by Allah.” You should behold all of that and show servitude in each vision.
109 Being with Allah alone in your thoughts and deeds.
110 You do not object to His commands, nor do you object to His decrees.
111 Your worship is not for immediate compensation, but for the ultimate prizes of His pleasure, nearness, and love.
